The Clones - First Awareness
Tom Haynes

(overview)

He was the first clone to realize what he was - a clone. They always teased him about being a clone, he just never believed them. It must have been the pain of death which wiped out the memory of death.

He could remember some of the passings now, he knew why he was terrified of spiders. Who knew that under the right conditions they could grow to be 3 feet tall? Thorium, a little blood, and the pale moonlight were a deadly combination most times, but through in a Brown Recluse on a humid Oklahoma summer night, well, don't do that again.

He could even remember the rows of canisters ready to be decanted, with the perfect little boy inside. Sometimes, they would all thrash as the operating one did something really emotional. It seemed strong feelings were most likely to get through.

He couldn't remember the progenitor though, Prime. And he couldn't remember why Prime was special, no one else had clones ready to go, to take over.
